Why choose Tanzania for your family holiday?

Tanzania is Africa’s most family-friendly country. It is also the ideal destination if you want to combine an adventurous family safari with a relaxing beach holiday. Tanzania’s northern parks (including Manyara, Tarangire, Serengeti and the Ngorongoro Crater) and southern parks alike (including Selous and Ruaha), offer a wide range of child-friendly activities to top off the incredible wildlife encounters.

A domestic flight allows you to easily combine any of these parks with a beach holiday on an island paradise. Flights depart to these island destinations on a daily basis. Tropical Zanzibar is the most popular destination and offers – apart from white sandy beaches and turquoise waters – a large variety of fun-filled water sports. If you are a dedicated diver and keen to swim with whale sharks, then Mafia Island is the perfect spot for your family.

At AQ Tours & Safaris, we love to arrange customized family safari and beach holiday combos! Contact us and get personal and professional help in organizing an unforgettable vacation in Tanzania!

What age is recommended for a family safari in Tanzania?

We cannot wholeheartedly recommend a safari with children below the age of seven. Young children easily tire from early morning starts and they become impatient when confined to a vehicle for prolonged periods. Moreover, children are often restricted in the activities they can engage in. Indeed, age restrictions apply for lodges in the southern parks where children under 7 are not welcome.

Children aged 7 and up will take delight in safaris, whether a classic safari, a hot air balloon adventure, a boat or canoe safari, a coffee tour, a cultural visit to one of the various tribes, a fly-camping experience in the bush, a walking safari, or snorkeling and diving in Zanzibar or Mafia. There are countless activity options for an amazing family safari and beach holiday in Tanzania.

Where to go and what to do on a family safari in Tanzania?

Tanzania is a very big country and almost 25% of it is dedicated to wildlife reserves. When it comes to National Parks you will be spoilt for choice. Both the northern and southern parks are equally family friendly but differ in terms of their landscapes and the type of wildlife seen there, as well as with regard to accommodations and activity options.

Tanzania’s northern parks are located very close to one another and all of them offer a remarkable family safari experience. While Tarangire is known for its large elephant herds, Manyara is a birders’ paradise. Both Serengeti and the Ngorongoro Crater provide a perfect balance of big game and cats along with family-friendly activities. These activities include balloon safaris, biking, coffee tours, cultural encounters with the Hadzabe Bushmen or Maasai Warriors, or a workshop at Shanga.

The parks in the South of Tanzania are located quite far from one another but are easily reached by plane. It is also possible to drive to Selous or Ruaha; however, we would only recommend this option to families with older children due to the extended time spent in the vehicle. Southern Tanzania is ideal for adventurous families. Possible activities include boating, fly camping, fishing and walking. It is also possible to combine Serengeti with Ruaha thanks to a recently-launched direct flight – a very nice combination!

How safe is a safari holiday?

There is some peril involved when you place yourself in the bush, the habitat of freely-roaming wild animals, and spend time in such close proximity of them. However, witnessing wildlife in their natural environment is what makes a safari so unique and thrilling. None of the safari camps and lodges in Tanzania are fenced in, but the properties have very strict policies to ensure the safety of guests. Always follow the instructions of the camp managers and guides and you should be able to enjoy a fantastic and rewarding safari experience in Tanzania.

We draw on our broad experience and plan thoroughly to ensure our guests will have a safe family safari. If you have any questions regarding safety – or any other concern with regard to family safaris in Tanzania – do not hesitate to contact us. We will gladly provide further information. To get to know us personally and learn more about the available options just use our contact form to make a nonbinding inquiry.
